W.T. White High School to celebrate 50th anniversary in April

Warren Travis White High School in Dallas will celebrate its 50th anniversary in April.

The school is planning an open house event and assembly to be held at the school for alumni and current students, current and former teachers and administrators, as well as parents and community members during the day on Saturday, April 11. That night, alumni will gather for a celebration gala at Brookhaven Country Club. A golf tournament for alumni followed by individual class happy hours will kick off the weekend of festivities on Friday, April 10.

“W.T. White High School has a very rich history of providing an outstanding educational experience for students,” said Marty French, Class of 1979, who has stepped up to lead the organizing committee. “We are all looking forward to this weekend to recognize and salute the important role that the school has had in so many lives.”

W.T. White opened for the first time for classes during the 1964-1965 school year. Its first class of graduating seniors, however, wasn’t until the 1965-1966 school year.

The “Walk the Halls” open house event will be held from noon to 3p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the school located at 4505 Ridgeside Drive. An assembly will include performances by the current band and choir. Alums are also planning a few surprises that will play out on stage that day

The celebration at Brookhaven will begin that night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at www.wtwhite.org.

W.T. White High School is known for its strong emphasis on Advanced Placement courses and outstanding fine arts programs. Students routinely earn passing scores on AP exams, allowing them to bypass several college courses during their freshman year in college. In addition, the school’s choir and band routinely score Division I ratings at UIL competition.

“Staff at the school take great pride in continuing the tradition of educational excellence started 50 years ago in this community,” said principal Michelle Thompson. “We all take very seriously our role in helping our current students maximize their potential in life.”

Notable alumni from W.T. White include former White House Communications Director Karen Hughes (1975), PGA golfer Scott Verplank (1982), philanthropist Susan Dell (1982), Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams (2008) and Detroit Tigers catcher Bryan Holaday (2006).
